Your Celebration Trek crew—July 13 to 20—will have the same crew leadership positions as a youth crew.

Your crew will need to select your advisor and crew leader before arrival at Philmont. (You can select the chaplain aide and Wilderness Pledge Guia upon arrival.) This will allow your crew to hit the ground running when we gather at the Welcome Center July 13.

Careful thought should be given to your crew leadership. All positions should be elected by the entire crew – don’t let persons self-appoint themselves. Also, having an advisor and crew leader from the same family unit is discouraged. This can result in negative crew dynamics.

Advisor

The advisor supports the crew leader. The advisor’s primary role is to coach, counsel and advise the crew leader. Additionally the advisor helps the crew leader to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the crew and addresses crew conflicts which may arise. The advisor should preferably be someone with prior Philmont experience.

Crew Leader

The crew leader is a key person for a successful Trek and works closely with the advisor. The crew leader should lead by example and be respected by the crew. The crew leader should discuss ideas with the crew to arrive at consensus before taking action. The crew leader should preferably be someone with prior Philmont experience.

Chaplain Aide

One crew member should serve as a chaplain aide. The chaplain aide will be asked to lead daily devotionals. A kit of worship resources including the booklet Eagles Soaring High will be provided for use along the trail. The Chaplain Aide will certify completion of requirements of the Duty to God award for each crew member.

Wilderness Pledge GUIA (Guide)

This person will help the crew understand the principles of the Philmont Wilderness Pledge and Leave No Trace. The Wilderness Pledge Guia will certify completion of the Wilderness Pledge Achievement Award for each crew member.
