Head For The High Country – And Adventure
“When I first came into the country of the Philmont Scout Ranch, it was from a world where a life-span was something that came in a neat package, precisely styled and sealed in plastic. Adventure then was some quality that had left with the older days, something that people could now only try to know in fiction or maybe experience from a pill.”

Dave Caffey’s account of his summers on the Philmont staff was originally published in 1973, and it was an immediate hit with both campers, advisors, and staff. The Philmont Staff Association is pleased to bring this now classic account of the Philmont Staff experience to a new generation. This 35th anniversary edition includes the original foreword by Philmont’s legendary Director of Camping Joe Davis, as well as a new introduction by the author.
David L. Caffey served on the Philmont staff from 1965 to 1977, including four years as Philmont’s Chief Ranger. He has since served Philmont as a member of the Ranch Committee (a volunteer advisory board for the Ranch) and as a board member of the Philmont Staff Association. Caffey is the author of two other books, including the definitive study of literature about New Mexico, Land of Enchantment, Land of Conflict: New Mexico in English-Language Fiction. He lives in Clovis, N.M., where he has served for many years in the senior leadership of Clovis Community College.
