Gretchen Sammis, owner of the Chase Ranch, one of Philmont’s great neighbors, and a PSA Silver Sage awardee, passed away Tuesday morning. I don’t have more details at this time but will reprint our June 2010 High Country Silver Sage article as a small reminder of her life and accomplishments…
“Gretchen Sammis is the owner of the Chase Ranch and is a current member of the Philmont Ranch Committee. A true legend of the American West and fourth-generation rancher, Gretchen has run the Chase Ranch with her foreman, Ruby Gobble, for some fifty years. In her early days running her ranch, Gretchen also taught school in Cimarron (she holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees) and later became the first woman elected to the Cimarron School Board. She is also a member of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and was named New Mexico’s Cattleman of the Year in 2007. A lifetime of commitment to her land and sound conservation practices has earned her positions on the New Mexico Soil and Water Conservation Commission, the agriculture advisory committee to the state land office, and the New Mexico Resource Advisory Council.”
Update: Her service will be on Saturday, August 18th at 11:00am at the Chase Ranch.
