This year, 2013, is special a grand year for Philmont Scout Ranch. The 75th anniversary of Waite Phillips’ gift of his New Mexico ranch to the Boy Scouts of America will be celebrated by campers and participants attending Philmont and the Philmont Training Center this summer. Philmont continues to provide wilderness adventures that last a lifetime to more young people.

This year, 2013, is also a special year for the Philmont Staff Association. Founded in 1973, the PSA turns 40 years old this year. This is an occasion to celebrate, and that celebration will occur at Philmont Scout Ranch. The PSA Reunion will be a week-long conference at the Philmont Training Center on July 14-20, 2013. Mark this date on your calendar and make plans to attend this special event.

Similar to the past two PSA week-long conferences (2005 and 2010), the 2013 reunion week will include opportunities to gather and fellowship as former Philstaff, make new friends, share old memories, and make some new ones. The Colfax Colloquium returns to the reunion, featuring speakers covering topics from Southwest history and culture to outdoor skills and craftsmanship. In addition to these seminars, there will be service projects, hikes, Philmont art and literature, and much more. The PSA’s Annual Meeting and Silver Sage awards will highlight the agenda on Friday, July 19. Be sure to be at Philmont for the decade-era photos on the Villa lawn (on Friday). Some of the PSA’s founders will be amongst our gathering, too.

Since our reunion will be at PTC, this will be an ideal venue for your family vacation. There are programs for children and spouses, as well as family gatherings in the evenings. Tent cities at PTC accommodate you and your family. Tents are large two-person wall tents on wooden or concrete floors with electricity, lighting, a wardrobe, and two twin beds. Each tent city has restrooms and hot showers. There is also a Laundromat on the PTC campus. Meals are provided at the PTC Dining Hall.

Family members from infants to grandparents can come and enjoy themselves:

  • Family members will participate in programs catered to their specific age groups.
  • While they have fun during the day, you will still get to spend meals and participate in evening activities as a family.
  • There is a full service Nursery available for infants to 2 year-olds, and the Small Fry Center is dedicated to providing exciting care for 3 to 5 year-olds.
  • Depending upon age, the activities range from hiking, archery & rifle, pony rides, horseback riding, games, sports, and overnighters in the backcountry!
  • Children 14—18 can choose to go on a Mountain Trek, where they spend a week on the trail and get to experience the backcountry.
  • Spouses get to fill their week with activities like hiking, handicrafts, touring unique New Mexico locations, challenging themselves on the high ropes COPE course, and much more!
