It is the end of another year and I hope you were able to come out to Philmont to rekindle old memories, see friends from years past and visit the places that continue to stay fresh in your mind. The brand of Philmont is special and is there to remind us just how meaningful our time on staff was. As members of the PSA, we are so lucky to have two important things: a strong connection to the Ranch and a wonderful group of members. You are the reason why the PSA works hard year after year to publish the incredible magazine, High Country, offer treks, create events across the country, and keep the connection going.

When each of you worked at Philmont, whether in the backcountry, Camping Headquarters or PTC, you no doubt made friends that have enriched your life. I am always amazed when I see how strong the friendship bonds are between current and former staff.
It is all about relationships!

Thank you for being loyal members of the Philmont Staff Association, for supporting the organization with your gifts of friendship, service and money. It makes all the difference! I am proud to be associated with the PSA. It is a treasured part of my life. I hope each of you will return to the brand and keep the connection strong in 2018.

Annual Fund – Someone New

I always like it when someone new gets a chance to see Philmont. You can try to describe it, but until they walk among the pines, enjoy the cool mountain air and see the history first hand, they won’t get “that feeling”. Last year my two daughters came to the Ranch for the first time. You can tell by the smile on their faces that they were enjoying everything about the backcountry, in this case Beaubien.

As former staff members we know how special this place is. That is why I support the PSA and give of my time whenever possible. It just feels good to stay involved and continue the traditions of Philmont Scout Ranch. PSA is dependent on your contributions in order to operate throughout the year and offer former staff opportunities to come back HOmE – Treks, reunions, service projects, and much more.

Randy Saunders Resigns as PSA Executive Director

An Open Letter to Members of the Philmont Staff Association

The Board of Directors of the Philmont Staff Association has accepted with regret the resignation of PSA Executive Director, Randy Saunders. Randy has been offered a position in Albuquerque, where his wife and family reside—and we understand the attraction of such a position. While the Board regrets the loss of such an outstanding and dedicated professional who has served us well since 2007, we support his family decision. Randy will remain with us through the month of January 2016 and Dollie O’Neill will serve as interim director of the association until the search is completed and a finalist selected.

Attached with this letter is a copy of the relevant section of the PSA By-Laws which defines the duties of the Executive Director. This is the job description which will guide the Personnel Committee, and eventually the Board of Directors, in selecting our next Executive Director. Salary is commensurate with comparable employment positions with the BSA. The Executive Director is expected to reside in the Philmont area. The committee has decided on the following timeline for that selection process:

Jan 15 Position is advertised online and in electronic mailing to PSA members.

Feb 15 Letters of application together with appropriate resume and list of not more than three references due to John Murphy at the address below.

Feb 15 Consideration of applications begins and continues until Mar 15.

Mar 16 Board of Directors meets by conference call to receive recommendations from Personnel Committee.

Mar 17 Announcement of next Executive Director.

Apr 16 New Executive Director begins duties at Ranch.

The Personnel Committee understands that extraordinary circumstances may warrant departure from this schedule, but it anticipates no such circumstances at the present time. Candidates, or persons who wish to nominate others for possible consideration, are therefore advised to be attentive to deadlines.

Continually Humbled

Thanks so much for all of you who helped put us on the summit of our 2013 Annual Fund goal. And for those who supported us through the President’s Circle–these two efforts provide the majority of our operational funds. Over the past six years of my Presidency, I have been continually humbled by the generosity of our members. Their willingness to donate time, talent and treasure is what makes the PSA the amazing organization it is–I am proud to be a part of it. Again, thanks for your support over the past six years–I look forward to helping John and his new board continue the successful operations we have come to expect from your PSA.

A Beautiful Way to End

It was a beautiful way to end 2013…by watching the generosity of PSA members as they answered the call for our Annual Fund.
