Charles “Chuck” DuBois

Chuck DuBois’ friends described him as an “outdoorsy guy”. And he was that, preferring to be outside over a desk job. He loved to fish and backpack. Chuck was an OATC foreman at Philmont in 2002, where he acquired a passion for chopping, sawing, picking, digging and working with his hands. He spent most of that summer leading six OA crews completing the Black Horse Canyon trail between Baldy and Miranda. Following a week of trail work, each of his crews would build their own itinerary and spend a week trekking throughout the Ranch, contributing to unending stories of blisters, storms, inspiring sunrises/sunsets, and close encounters with bears, mountain lions and creatures of the dark.

Chuck was a life member of the Philmont Staff Association, and he and his dad, Dennis, trekked together in 2003 and 2015 with the PSA.

Chuck passed away peacefully on November 11, 2018 as a result of a previously undetected coronary condition. He and his fraternal twin brother, John, were born in the Frankfurt Army Hospital, Frankfurt Germany, on December 6, 1980. He graduated from Woodbridge High School in Woodbridge VA in 1999 and James Madison University in 2003 with a BS in Computer Information Systems. He was a talented and well respected IT program manager, having worked for Science Applications International Corporation and Booze Allen Hamilton. He had also been a federal employee with the Defense Information Systems Agency and was the lead in developing federal network security architecture with the Department of Homeland Security at his passing.

In high school he lettered numerous times in track, cross country, band and was a member of the National Honor Society. He set a district cross country record which stood for nearly 10 years; as a runner and academic he earned a full ride scholarship to The Citadel. He played 1st trumpet in the high school orchestra; in addition to trumpet, he played the piano, guitar and mandolin. He was a delegate to the American Legion Boys State in 1998.

Chuck was very active in Scouting and the Order of the Arrow. He was an Eagle Scout, Life member of the National Eagle Scout Association, Vigil member of the OA (1996), Chief of Amangemak-Wipit Lodge (1998-99) and recognized with the National OA Founders Award (1999). A world-class “Old Style” American Indian dancer, he won 5th Place at NOAC (National Order of the Arrow Conference) 1998, and 2nd Place at NOAC 2000. Chuck served on several OA Jamboree Village staffs and was active in the American Indian Activities community as an Old Style dance judge. For more than a dozen years he was an instructor at the Eswau Hoppeday OA Lodge’s annual Carolinas Indian Seminar, where he was held in high esteem for teaching old style dancing and making old style dance bustles and outfits. He earned a reputation among local American Indian groups as a dancer and was a member of the Zotigh Drum, an internationally known native singing and drum group. His Vigil name was WISCHIXIN GENTGEEN, interpreted as ACTIVE ONE WHO DANCES.
